Riveting
A rivet is a permanent metal fastener. It consists of a smooth cylinder shaped shaft with a head on one end. The opposite end is the buck-tail. When installed, the rivet is placed in a punched or pre-drilled hole. The tail is upset or bucked, so that expands larger than the original shaft diameter. This holds the rivet in place. The original head is called the factory head, and the deformed end is called the shop head or buck tail.
The rivet can support tension loads, which are parallel to the axis of the shaft. It is more capable of supporting shear loads that are perpendicular to the axis. Bolts and screws are better for tension loads.
Fasteners used in wooden boat building like copper nails and clinch bolts used the same principle as rivets long before the term rivet was used.
Types of rivets:
There are a number of types of rivets. Types are designed to meet different uses, costs, and availability.
Types include:
- Solid rivets
- Semi tubular rivets
- Blind rivets
- Drive rivets
- Flush rivets
- Friction lock rivets
- Self-pierce rivets
Kitting
Kitting puts together two or more items to form one product group. It is then sold as a single item. Inventory accounts for each individual part in the kit. Kitting saves business time and it saves the customer money. Each component in a kit is normally discounted, saving money as the kit is sold as one unit.
Kitting also saves time. As a kit user, you only have to find one kit item to order and to install or use in your application. You do not have to search for each individual item in the kit. You just find the kit you need and order it.
When your customers order by kit, you can get the order out the door and to them faster.
Riveting, including bolting, and kitting are just two of Midlake’s assembly capabilities. Midlake also offers a number of assembly option including hardware installation, complete component installation, finished product construction, special packaging, and customer special requirements.
And remember, our manufacturing facilities are located just outside the Akron / Canton area, making us just a short drive away from Cleveland and other parts of Ohio.
